PI Connector for IEC 60870-5-104 bi-directional between SCADA and PI

RWE Power AG “But one really important feature we need, is the ability to write back from PI into the SCADA system Until now, we couldn’t find anything about this (important) functionality. So our question is if we can use this connector bi-directional? And if not, is this already in the roadmap for this connector?”

At this time, we do not plan to add support for bi-directional communication using PI Connector for IEC 60870-5-104.

Hi, we internally developed an interface with the write functions for IEC 104 protocol. If you are interested please contact us to have more information on it (giuseppe.dibartolo@tqservice.com) Regards, Giulia

Hi! We are currently sending data of around 200 tags to the SCADA system, but this number will rapidly increase in the near future. Frequency is depending on the data’s purpose but is as small as “once every 3 seconds”. We are controlling small, decentralized systems connected to the Scada system utilizing different systems doing complex analysis based on heuristics and near real time data processing. These are hard to in cooperate directly into the SCADA System thus we use the PI System to send a set of commands and set points to the SCADA System.

Chris, if it can help, we do have several utilities here in Italy asking for this specific functionality around 104 connector. The main use is about sending back data to SCADA / RTUs in order to initialize the asset with setpoint values. By doing this in native 104, customers can rely on direct integration (104) and avoid the implementation of additional gateways. Without his, they currently need to connect RTUs to OPC Servers moving away from 104 protocol, move data to/from PI via OPC, write back via OPC output tags, retranslate to 104 protocol and finally write on RTU. Hope that helps, i can provide more details if needed. /L.

Hello, in my case I need to send calibration parameters to sensors. Not operate, just calibrate.
