Support SQL Azure as a PI AF SQL backend

As an administrator, I want to use SQL Azure as the database backend for my PI AF databases, so that I can offload the SQL adminstrative tasks to Azure.

AVEVA PI Server 2024 (specifically Asset Framework 2024) has been released and now supports Azure SQL DB as its backend. We are also continuing to evaluate other DBaaS providers - Azure SQL Managed Instance and Amazon RDS.

This will be of great value to all Global Business Units for the Company I work for as we migrate PI AF and Vision to Azure Cloud. Our IT costs for licensing and managing / maintaining many SQL Server environments is reduced as well as improving our availability and security in the Cloud. It is worth noting that the SQL Server Managed Services is a more mature offering than initial offering and provides all functionality that PI Vision / AF solutions would require.

Microsoft have a new option now with Managed SQL Servers that would probably be easier implemented (as it's just a SQL Server that MS manages the SO). https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/sql-database-managed-instance

We are using PI System on Azure VMs. We had experienced many works and troubles on SQL Server instances and really want to use Azure SQL Database(Managed service) instead of SQL Server on VM.

Can you tell me what you hope to achieve with SQL Azure? Is it a management consideration or IT requirement or ???

would more than welcome this feature! We would like to focus on our core task (data analysis and turning data into value) keeping servers into the air, taking backups etc is not our core business, so would be a big plus if we could use (as for all our other sql databases, SQL Azure - Azure SQL managed Instance if needed. Making PI AF compatible with SQL Azure manged instance should not be a big deal for OSISoft. Thanks for giving this the right prioirty.

Having SQL server in a SaaS model offers many advantages over a hosted database on Premise or in Azure VM (IAAS model) : Upgrades, patching, back-up, Disaster / recovery (using High Availability for PI). It is clear for me MicroSoft is taking the direction of Managed Instance. On premise databases will of course not disappear any time soon. Business wants to invest in skills to exploit the data , not to store them

I would like to understand what is OSIsoft direction on making PI AF compatible with SQL hosted on Azure as PaaS or SQL Managed Instance. I belive this is the direction many companies are also heading towards where they want to invest time/money on getting value out of the data than spending part of it in managing/storing the data.

A global Flexible Foams, Bedding, Insulation and Automotive manufacturer based in Belgium is looking for support of Managed Instance of MS SQL server for their Azure deployment of AF. All of their SQL servers are being moved to MI on Azure.

Agree with BartM, supporting Azure SQL can reduce our total cost of ownership.

I agree with Amit and BartM here. For our case it is very important that we are not bogged down with maintaining database in Azure as IaaS solution. The press to move into cloud really shows the need for an official support from OSIsoft on Azure SQL Managed Instance.

Has there been any progress on this? Migration to cloud is very relevant these days and PaaS / SaaS services is preferred over IaaS. Support for PaaS SQL solutions in Azure is highly sought after.

Due to a reduction in I.T. staff, we are looking for ways to get the best value for the business from the remaining staff. Moving to an Azure SQL Managed Instance is one way to achieve this. This follows on from the points made by PartickV and BartM about how it frees staff to analyze data rather than maintain data.

For me it is unacceptable that this idea has been closed! Our CSM for Shell is aware of our use cases and not supporting PI-AF as requested is costing us a lot of extra budget per year. Please connect with Clint Ostby.

I would like to see that either SQL Azure or SQL PaaS as a standard SQL solution supported by Osisoft. We at Shell have raised this topic long back when we wanted to make our PI AF redundant. We could not do it due to very less options provided and supported by Osisoft. Not we have gone to Azure to maximize the ability we can leverage in AF system but again SQL PaaS is not supported. So i would request SQL PaaS or SQL Azure managed instance get Osisoft support, otherwise we in PI will be left behind in comparison to our whole digital strategy at Shell. Moreover spending a large amount of $ on SQL IaaS Azure instance is always scrutinized.

Throwing my hat in the ring in support of Azure Managed SQL as an option for hosting AF database. Currently we are maintaining a set of AlwaysOn SQL servers to give us high availability, but this takes up a not-insignificant amount of IT resources (especially since I am not a DBA by training) not to mention cost. Moving to a Managed SQL instance would free up a lot of time on our IT team (which is already pretty lean).
