Composite element templates

As an user I want to be able to create a template hierarchy (parent-child) all at once, so that I can easily create a hierarchy representing related assets. For example, create a motor, gearbox, compressor train with a single template that actually consists of (in this case) 3 templates.

We completely agree. When you say the composite approach allows you to “…easily create a hierarchy…” we couldn’t agree more. We have seen what follows is leaner and much more sustainable at large scale.

Check out AVEVA’s PI Digital Twin libraries for PI AF, PIVision and BI. These libraries use the composite approach. They are provided by AVEVA Services consulting engineers, run on standard PI Server software and apply to all industries. We emphasize the use of parent element templates for primary assets (Compressor) and child element templates for secondary assets (Motor). We also introduce a child element template strategy for “accessory” functionality. The libraries provide a seamless taxonomy from tag to asset to event frame.

The PI Digital Twin libraries are provided at no cost. You only pay for the services time. The services can be as little as a couple hours up to a few weeks working together depending on your system complexity and your experience in PI. You will be accelerated immediately by this service and its libraries.

To get the PI Digital Twin libraries contact AVEVA Services and schedule services. Create a new Service request from the company portal my.osisoft.com or get in touch with your CSM or AM. You’ll save yourselves months of labor building PI templates and you’ll know you have the best approach for the future.

This is a requirement that I, and a number of other users, have identified as being very useful.

It should be part of PI AF's build-in feature, as everyone will think it should behave in this way naturally.

I understand this would probably be a major change on how AF is built, but composition would be extremely helpful for designing AF Databases and models.
