Yeah, it's a bit easy to confuse with removing the PI Point from the list.

This is a pretty serious issue - we recently had an accidental deletion of over 10 years of data because it is too easy. It took more than 30+ hours from multiple people (including OSIsoft Support) to recover the data.

Can you clarify if you mean PI Builder, which is an Excel plug-in or something different?

Pretty sure the requestor means PI SMT's Point Builder.  I am using SMT from the 2018 RC1 and the dialog I see is:   To me the wording is quite clear.  I have the option to remove it from a list or delete the PI Point.

The main issue here, in my opinion, is simply the placement of the option. In our case, the employee made a slip of the mouse (accidentally clicking delete instead of remove). At a minimum, they should be further apart, but I must agree with the OP - deleting a tag should not be this easy. The consequences are way too severe.   Another alternative would be more robust security settings (i.e. a permission that would allow for creation and editing, but not deletion). This would be ideal.

In response to Justin Conroy, "The main issue here, in my opinion, is s..." Justin, Can you please confirm which application you're talking about?  The title of this post is "PI Builder" yet I'm not certain we're really talking about PI Builder. -- Steve Kwan

in SMT under points and pi builder. when you have a list of points and want to remove one, you can right click the point and select "remove" however "delete" is right next to remove. if you accidently hit delete, your point is permanently deleted as is the data. this is like having a walkway next to a 100 foot cliff with live alligators at the bottom. maybe more like hungry live sea crocodiles. there is no "are you sure" it is just unceremoniously deleted
