Limit the load of the PIRecalculationprocessor when backfilling

We had a few issues with key-users creating inefficient AF Analysis and starting a backfill over a longer time period. This resulted in a CPU load of 100% (caused by the PIRecalculationprocessor). The whole PI System got not responsive incl. PI System Explorer so unable to see anything. Killing the PIRecalculationprocessor.exe process didn't work because a new process (with new PID) was running in a split second. Also setting process priority to Low didn’t make any difference. Need a way to limit the time period user can use to start backfill and / or limit the load of the PIRecalculationprocessor during backfilling

It's not practical to limit the time period for backfilling because every user may create different analyses and each analysis may use inputs with different data density. There are built in limits to how much resources backfills use up. We have relaxed some of these limits with newer version of the software. In particular we limit backfilling resources based on the amount of hardware that you have (Processing Cores). With the very first release in 2014, backfilling was limited to 1 thread. Which version are you using? In the upcoming PI Server 2018 SP2, you will have the ability to bulk cancel backfills.

In response to Stephen Kwan, "It's not practical to limit the time per..." PI AF Services 2017 R2 (2017.2.0.845) AF Server version 2.9.5.8368   Cancel backfill would be a good improvement. Incidents occurred after key users made inefficient (not reviewed) analysis and accidentally selected a long time period to backfill

What is the hardware configuration of your machine that's running PI Analysis Service?
