High availability options with Big-IP F5 for Notifications and Analytics instead of only Windows Clustering?

We have redundant servers for AF components (Notifications & Analytics). In a virtual environment, our IT doesn't support Windows Clustering due to the way storage is implemented enterprise wide. What does it take to support F5? Our IT engineers argue that F5 and Windows Clustering work on the same principle. We set everything up but during configuration in (AF), when we setup F5 FQDN, the Notification/Analysis services won't even start. We are willing to provide more info to make this work. Thanks.

If you're referring to F5 load balancer, it is correct that PI Analysis Service and PI Notifications Service both do not support that. Both of these services work in a stateful manner and cannot support the way a load balancer may switch from one VM to another (and back) for the purpose of balancing load across multiple VM's. We have not tested using a load balancer for the purpose of providing high availability and we have no plans to implement that at this time.

Thanks Steve. Would it be possible to support two different analysis servers with the same PI AF server? With growing number of PI Tags and PI Analysis calculations, we would like to designate separate analysis services hosted on separate VMs. Is that possible or on your roadmap? I am curious what some of your customers with a number of PI Servers with millions of PI Points use? Relying on a single Analysis service requiring clustering support doesn't give a lot of confidence in the production environments.

Hi Jagdish, please see this idea requesting multiple instances of PI Analysis Service. Please provide your input to the idea and your use case, if different than already listed. https://feedback.osisoft.com/forums/555148/suggestions/33839161
