A large Oil & Gas organization with more than 4K PI Vision users identified PI Vision calculations as one of their biggest PI System challenges. Adoption of this feature has grown significantly over time and has started creating performance, governance, and scalability concerns as more engineers create and depend on PI Vision calculations.
The organization recognizes that moving calculations into AF Analytics is the preferred long-term approach and has already done so for many business-critical calculations. However, opening AF Analytics development to the broader engineer population is not considered viable. Their AF governance model limits AF development to a small group of specialists because PI AF is mission critical and the source for multiple use cases, so it can`t be opened to the general population.
To address the immediate issue, they recently restricted PI Vision calculation creation to a small number of designated power users within each business unit. While this has reduced risk, stakeholders described it as "regulate and restrict" rather than a true solution and do not believe it can scale long term.
A "Promote to AF Analysis" capability that converts a PI Vision calculation into an equivalent AF Analysis, with an approval workflow would allow customers to maintain self-service analytics in PI Vision while improving governance, scalability, reuse of calculations, and long-term maintainability.
