To be able to provide users with extra information, be that additional data or a free text message.
To reduce troubleshooting time for admins, by being able to quickly locate information.
Content:
ability to use all of the possible substitution parameters, and attributes associated with a value whether it be a PI tag or an AF attribute; and
be able to use free text; and
be able to include symbols or select a style for the tool tip bubble - for example types of: Info, Warning, Data-source, Operator Action; as this would assist with the ease of interpretation for the users.
Configurability:
ability to include the substitution parameters in any order that the creator desired; and
the ability to set some defaults would be time saving and provide the opportunity for consistency; and
some permissions controls on this might be useful or we could get some very interesting tooltips! Perhaps free text or certain types of tooltip (e.g. Warnings, Operator Actions) would require admin permissions - otherwise there is the potential for it get very visually-noisy for users
Ideally it will be equally beneficial to PI Vision Users and Admins: users will benefit from the additional information/direction; and admins can save time on troubleshooting/explaining.
We would like a configurable tooltip, at a minimum users need to see the min, max and average values of a pi point on hover, but being able to configure what data is shown per display would be preferable. We would also like to be able to alter the text formatting of the tooltip, increasing the text size as many Displays we use are in communal areas for monitoring and may be at some distance from the user.
To stop users spending unnecessary time creating multiple displays where one switchable AF based display would suffice. At the moment we cannot convince users to use an AF database because they have no visibility of the underlying tag unless they have PI System Explorer.
In the configuration of a trend/value etc, you should be able select what parameters are shown within a tooltip.
Users will benefit from being able to make use of asset switchable displays and admins will benefit from a reduction in questioning about what tag is used in an attribute.
I have a number of use cases for tooltips
Providing visibility to additional info on a visual component linked to a pi tag or attribute, as has been previously discussed
Providing additional context or explanation for a display or display component. This might provide an explanation of what the display or component means, or suggestions on how to interpret a display
Providing a place to temporarily display additional attributes. Often a display is crowded, and data of secondary importance might not fit easily. A pop up panel could provide a place for a peek into additional data via attributes or pi tags.
I agree with the comments below regarding showing the PI tag, but do not just assume it is a PI tag. We also have cases where we use formulas to synthesize a value instead of writing analytics to output to a PI tag. The tool tip should have the option to display the data reference and settings field...
The first thing I wrote in the 1980s (in Fortran) was an enhancement to our home-grown process visualization tool. We could not hover to get a tool tip, but clicking on a button replaced the values displayed with the data source (tag or formula) at the location on the display. This saved hundreds of hours of troubleshooting every year between end users and the developments.... I would have the same expectation in this case as well.
It is very interesting to me that folks cannot see a PI tag name when looking at an AF object. I'm very surprised. We had to purchase additional PI Vision tools to make Vision usable. We used a company called Software Athlete. It is very inexpensive and the offer support for tooltips and showing PI tag names.
The 2 main reason why this tooltip configuration is needed
Ease of use for our customers
Timereduction during troubleshooting
Already 288 votes are on this topic so this means that it's beneficial for a lot of customers!
More details:
To be able to check the correct tag configuration in AF for end users it would be a good improvement to be able to see the pi tagname in the tooltip of an AF PItag attribute.
Because the end user currently does not see the AF configuration of the pi point in pivision, they have to contact backend engineers to get the used tag configuration, which they need to check if the correct tag is used in the pivision screens.
This creates unnecessary delays in updates and corrections of displays and assets and offcourse extra request to the backend engineer.
I'd like to use tooltips to provide information about the tagname of a PI Point present behind the AF attribute
Having the tag name avaliable would allow me to look at the P&ID and DCS for the affected system and act on off aim conditions faster.
In addition to Abigail's comments, the tool tip is essential for efficiency in troubleshooting. E.g. An operator reports that certain values are not updating on a dashboard. These issues are reported to tech support. The first question is always "What is the tag name or tag names that aren't updating?" IP21 has the feature on their portal displays that when you hover over an indicator by default the tool tip indicates the specific tag number. The tool tip can be overwritten, but this is the default setting. The lack of this feature is the #1 complaint of new OSI PI Dashboard users at our site.
The ability to customize the tooltip (i.e. to show the instrumenttag field) or similar, would be a significant improvement in our ability to integrate the use of Pi vision with other systems (maintenance databases, P&IDs, DCS, etc.) that continue to use instrument tag names.
Tooltip Statistics was one of my most-used features in Pi ProcessBook. I find it very difficult to use Pi Vision without the option to display additional information about a tag by hovering over it, in particular the name/description which saves a lot of time when unfamiliar with a display.
In my experience, it is something that has been requested several times. I believe this should be something easy to implement and very useful.
My suggestion, Instead of involving the tag name or tag descriptor from the DA to an Attribute in AF, an easier way to implement it would be to add to the current visibility label options the AttributeConfigString (only for Attributes which have a PI Point as data reference), simultaneously being able to combine it with the Element Name,Attribute Name or the Attribute description.
please add this feature. a lot of users want to know the average value of the tag at a glance which is how they used to do it in processbook
I would like to have a tooltip on header of column in a event table, to show the complete name of the attribute of the column.
