Trend: Show data item descriptions

Be able to view the tag/attribute descriptions on the bottom of the trend the same way that you are able to in ProcessBook. For those of us with large DB, it is very important to have this functionality.

In PI Vision 2020, we added labeling options to the trend symbol (and other symbols) to show element/tag/attribute name, tag/attribute description, or custom text. This allows you to configure the trend legend to show data item descriptions. For more information, see the PI Vision 2020 release announcement here: https://customers.osisoft.com/s/knowledgearticle?knowledgeArticleUrl=000031641 If your feedback request includes the ability to change the positioning of the legend in the trend symbol, please subscribe to the feedback item here: https://feedback.osisoft.com/forums/320517-pi-vision/suggestions/32365312-allow-configuration-of-trend-legend-position

That indeed should be a must-have feature to have. The need of having the description in the trend is bigger when you don't have still an AF hierarchy and you are using PI tags in the trends. Most of the times PI tag names are not very friendly and it is hard for people to guess what data they are visualizing.

Description when searching would also be very valuable.

Both of these comments are good. Being able to search descriptions would be very useful when someone has a general idea of what they need but might not know the equipment (tag) number.

This shall be a standard PI function. Currently PI show the tag path, tag and description on the pop up opened when you put the cursor aver the TAG in the ASSET list display (left side of the window). However the same is NOT shown when you put the cursor over the tag in the trend display.

Again, it's difficult to understand why OSISoft present their flagship product with such deficient standard items. It should have been policy to, at very least, provide an item that was at least as good as the ProcessBook symbol it replaced. ProcessBook allows inclusion of any combination of value, units, name, descriptor: this should have been the starting point, not something that needs to be asked for......

I copied and modified the Trend Symbol to put my own legend on it. We use this everywhere now. It was also important to see the real tag names and not the AF alias

i would have it show underneath the tag name and give the option to show the tag name, description or both.

I also want the option to display description, but if I choose to display it, under the tag name.

configurable options . . . descriptions visible: True/False, legend location: right/bottom. When hovering mouse over legend items it currently shows the name w/root, have that text box show description as well.

I think there could be 2 options. if the legends are situated where they are now, the tooltip text should include extra information about a certain legend (showing the description for instance). The other option with more potential is to show legends in the bottom of the trend and using the horizontal space aviable to show customizable columns. These colums could be: Attribute, description, full path, maxium/minium/average value over range.

Thank Ryan, For our use I would love to have something similar to the visibility options that are available in the value object. We could choose to include description here. If selected the description would show below the name of the attribute and above the value on the right side of the actual trend. Currently we have to break from the base template to give our end users the sensor name. For instance 'Air Supply Pressure' might be the templated attribute, but for a particular asset the user wants to know that this signal is from PT-1. We could use a child attribute to do this, but it adds a good bit of work for the users and doesn't look as clean. A description would be more fitting here I feel.

I am referring to attribute description from AF, not Tag description in my case.

Ideally it would be nice to be able to give each point an alias that is different than the point description. For instance, we may have a pressure described as "D10 Pressure". That means a lot to operations, but when you are looking at a trend as a compressor engineer, it would be better if we could relabel it as "C100 Suction Pressure" without affecting the point descriptor. At a minimum, we need to have the point descriptions displayed at the bottom of the trend similar to the Process Book format.

Id prefer to be able to configure the trend legend to show, but at least Id like to see the TAG's descriptor under the plot area of the trend.

G'day Ryan I think it would be fine just to display the descriptions at the bottom of the trend (depending on size of the trend and number of trends) just like in Pi ProcessBook. For me, a good starting point would be to put ALL of the functionality in ProcessBook into Vision. I simply don't use Vision because it is too limiting and cumbersome to use. Thanks, Rob

Hi - Great idea if it can be done. We have some really long tag names e.g :- Lower Mersey-Mersey Estuary (N).Liverpool.SL1.Primary Drum Thickeners Thickened Sludge Holding Tanks.Quality System - Dry Solids 1.QX_PV_IN On the trend attached the legend just shows as "Lower Mersey-Mersey" but it would be ideal to replace that with the point description which might be "Solids Holding Tank 1"

The ideal would be to be able to choose in the symbol to display the data description, or a free text (to be entered there) : this is actually possible in the gauge or the value symbols. It could be nice to choose where to place the trend legend : on the right (by default) but also at the top, bottom or left

It would be good for the description to be as configurable as possible. It would also be useful to have an additional alias to be able to use, or access to other AF database fields. As other users have mentioned, we have an AF attribute name, but it would also be useful to have access to the source tag name, so that users can see exactly where the signal is coming from. This is currently buried in the AF settings, which can't be accessed from PI Vision. Finally, the description should be visible when hovering over a legend item.

Hello I would like to see as default pi point and description: Pi-point, Pi-point description, and Units. Optional to configure: select, one item or both . Keep in the same place. Same for Pi Vision and Process book.

Anything would be better than the current nothing. You don't always have to have the description showing. Descriptions with multiple tags can use a lot of space on a graphic but you need the ability to see a description at any time somehow. User flexibility like PI process book handling would be nice. some users will want/need full legend. However in order, I would take * Ability to have a title for the trend allows quick 1 line manually entered descriptions. * Tool tip hover works nice in the search tool. It would be nice to have that consistency and that takes no space. * Simple descriptor legend PI process book as it is low space as well. * last a full legend like you are developing for the AD hoc which.
