Nesting collections

It would be good if collections were essentially full-blown mini-displays, where you could group/ungroup objects and also include a collection inside another collection.

      1. What specific problem are you trying to solve with this enhancement?

        • e.g.: we'd like show multiple tank farms with details at the same time. For each individual storage the level (gauge symbol) should be shown with some additional values. The storage tanks should be grouped by tank farm which has some overall KPIs from some higher level element.
The user should be able to select a region and see all related tank farms and individual storage levels & KPIs.

        • There are multiple cases like this where we'd like to show assets grouped by some higher elements to render dynamically by e.g. changing a region.

      2. How would you like this feature to work?

        • Being able to create a new collection on top of an existing one. There could be even more "layers" than just 2. Just imagine then we could select a region and it would show a collection of all plants with a collection of units with a collection of assets.
Additionally there need to be sorting and filtering settings based on attribute values on each level.

      3. Who will benefit the most from this enhancement?

        • Those who want to get an overall overview, basically all users. even more a central functions with the need of an overview: e.g. for the example case: a central planning department which quickly needs to get an overview over capacities to adapt a planning

      • What specific problem are you trying to solve with this enhancement?

        • Representing an Hydro Power Plant in an AF hierarchy brings Power Plant, with on to several turbines, and 2 to several bearing per turbines

        • Actually it can't be done

      • How would you like this feature to work?

        • Allow to embed a collection in an existing collection, and allow to configure the link (query) between them

      • Who will benefit the most from this enhancement?

        • All our users (>1200)

      Love this idea!

      1. What specific problem are you trying to solve with this enhancement? we need ways to navigate multiple levels in a hierarchy. for example, choose refinery, choose division, choose unit. so being able to drill down in a cleaner way than just the 1 dropdown at top for the user would great

      2. How would you like this feature to work? this could be done multiple ways like additional nested dropdowns or hierarchy selection. flexibility is always good (IOTA does this)

      3. Who will benefit the most from this enhancement? operations, management, technical

I think this training video by OSISoft Learning on Youtube: PI Vision - Add Asset Filter Criteria and Navigation Links, actually shows a use case for Nested Collections. The Trainer has to create a collection for each of his sites instead of using a collection to pull all the sites with a nested collection that pulls all the pumps.

You've got my vote. Collections within collections would allow multiple levels of a hierarchy to be dynamically created in one display. There are occasions where some levels in the hierarchy don't have much information and in a drill down set of displays, having the extra step would be pointless. Whilst a collection can display all descendants which would skip the level, the level is still important in dividing the descendants on the display. Nested (or sub) collections would make this possible.

Have had several instances in the last few months where this feature would have been extremely useful. Please consider implementing, this improvement idea has obviously been open for quite a while without any real tangible solution.

Would be super useful for dashboard displays and navigation panes

It would help standardise many displays. I agree with others

We have many assets spread out over many sites, nested collections is the number one feature most users want in our organisation.

This would save a lot of customization

It seems like a natural extension of the concept given that all of AF is a hierarchy.

We currently have to create custom symbols to accomplish this. It will be a great feature.

Nested collections is the logical way to visualize the hierarchical elements. It's hard to sell the hierarchical model to my engineers without a sensible way to visualize it.
