Update PI Web API with AF SDK supporting .NET 8

With the announcement of a new .NET 8 AF SDK at AVEVA World 2023 coming sometime in 2024, we would like to see a new version of the PI Web API that adopts this new version.

Following the release of AF SDK on .NET 8, we plan to update PI Web API to use this version of AF SDK. Please share your use case around this idea!

2024 has come and gone with no AF SDK for .NET 8. It was moved to 1H 2025 and later pushed back to 2H 2025. I do see a 4Q 2025 release of PI Server, so pretty sure it would be 4Q. The promise, hopes, and wishes of AF SDK for .NET 8 is that it can be somewhat faster as it will support gRPC instead of WCF. As a developer, I am looking forward to not fighting with NuGet packages that no longer support .NET Framework, or are vulnerable. And equally I look forward to working with many cloud-friendly NuGet packages.

If the promise of faster performance holds up with AF SDK for .NET 8, then it would be a huge benefit for AVEVA to use that as the underlying AF SDK client for their own products, like PI Web API Server.
