In the industry the demand for secure & native OPC UA integration is increasing.
Ability to make PI data available through OPC UA protocol is certainly something what should be addressed by AVEVA.
Either an PI OPC UA Server to allow connected applications to pull PI data using OPC UA, or, as suggested here, to have an Adapter to push data into external OPC UA Servers
Complexity might be the fact that Adapters are not designed to read from their OMF endpoints.

Eagerly waiting to understand the AVEVA roadmap. Usage of DA/UA wrappers should only be a workaround

I need to be able to send a command to the data source so that I can remotely shutdown / failsafe a monitored asset in case a problem is about to happen.

If writes are required, it might be best to have read-only and write-only versions of the PI Adapter. See this suggestion for more details: https://feedback.osisoft.com/forums/555142-pi-interfaces/suggestions/40997296-separate-commonly-used-pi-interfaces-into-read-onl
