I would love to see a simple tag table that has all of the fields. add it to a display with filters and save the display. allow the filters to be changed.
in the normal tag search field - have an options button which chooses the fields you're searching.
Ideally we would have a "Find" function which searches displays and AF database for the instances of the tag - this does not have to be in Pi Vision but as development is focused there maybe it should be.
See this as two parts - one is making the search better (which it looks like is happening here). Other part is presenting the list of tags - tag name alone isn’t great. Sure you can hover over it to get the description, but it’s much faster to read down a list. Should be aiming for what the search was in ProcessBook
As others wrote. The PSE search is perfect, the problem I can see with that is that it probably leverages AF SDK on the client side. Also someone wrote that complext searches could be difficult on mobile.
Maybe a reasonable middle ground can be an "advanced search" button that checks if AF SDK is available on the client and if yes, then the PSE search box is given. If no, then use the search as it is today.
Please also add Point Security. This is valuable to search by to find tags that specific identities have read/write access to.
Just do same same as what was implemented in processBook.
Our users wants to keep the possibility of displaying the snapshot value of the tags returned by the search.
Please don't reinvent your own wheel! Just use System Explorer search - it's the best one you have.
Like many others already said, we should be able to filter any attribute.
One could argue that power users should use System Explorer for more advanced options but I would like to be able to be efficient even when I'm on the move.
Results must be shown in a table with columns for some basic attributes (at least "description").
Also "Show tag attributes" as a table is a must (obviously with the possibility to ctrl-C). It is so important we had to create a very basic add-on...
i think is useful the search by all four user field userint and userreal.
When searching for PI points in PI vision. the asset panel should display the various attributes for a selected PI point. There is plenty of real-estate in the "attribute" section of the search pane that is not being leveraged.
As far as other tag attributes that are important to us:
Timestamp (to be used in conjunction with Value)
Creation date
Creator
Change Date
Changer
Working with PI tags over the last 8 years, I had to get tag dumps for units using just the equipment/unit name, add engg unit columns or others to sort and filter, etc.
I still prefer PI ProcessBook just for how good the tag search and trend is and more so for the ease of it.
Having this feature implemented in any future tool is a no brainer.
Used this search in Datalink and ProcessBook all the time.
Tag: * FC *
Description: *D222*
When building displays in PI vision I need ProcessBook open so I can search for the tagnames like this.
Please and Thank You
I think I was the original poster of this topc, but as it was posted under 'Guest', I don't have a way of replying to the Admin response. I feel that other respondents to this thread have more than adequately expressed my thoughts and provided similar use cases to what I had in mind.
when we get the tag list result, it should be in a table that displays the description. Having a default search page with the tables of tags - essentially the tag search tool that PSMT or excel add in has. default columns should just be tagname and description - these are the two things most used by the engineers on site. once the search result is done having filters on the columns would be great
We need to have the same search features for tags as we have in PI ProcessBook, PI Datalink, PI Builder or PI SMT : nothing less, nothing more
I agree to all suggestions below. so basically the request from my end is a way in PI Vision to pull up Point Attributes in order to see for example the Instrument Tag of a particular point. This feature is possible in PI Processbook under
Tools->Point Attributes.
Most end users of PI Vision don't have PI System Explorer and want save time going to Excel Datalink. And with Processbook to be sunsetted, this feature will be of immense help in PI Vision for searching using Point Attributes.
As many users have stated, the typical workaround used is to go to PI Datalink and search for the tag, and then enter it into PI Vision once you find what you are looking for. Also almost all of the requested functionality is already met in the PI Datalink tag search. To me this suggests that the obvious solution is to implement search functionality that at least very closely matches the PI Datalink tag search tool as an advanced search functionality inside of PI Vision. The current search method could be kept, but with a button near the top to bring up an advanced search window that would look like the PI Datalink tag search popup.
For users this would help maintain a smooth experience between different tools with a relatively small learning curve, and for the developers it would eliminate the need to reinvent the wheel in terms of how the interface should be laid out.
Many of our users have issues with finding tags in assets.
Search options
Some way to put in an “advanced” search string to give you the options as provided in PI Builder add-in.
(As far as I’m concerned, there is no need to have an elaborate input window with a bunch of fields. Basic users have no need for that, and advanced users can handle a search string.)
Visualization of the results
Seeing the description in a column next to the tag in the results table would be much more preferable to having to hover over each tag.
Some way to see multiple columns in the results window (configurable).
Maybe keep the tooltip option for actual value / uom
First of all are importaint:
point source and location1 to see, where the data comes from.
point type - I search often for float data signals.
diverse other attributes are needed sometimes. I look then first in PI SMT to find the tag name and then in PI Vision...
Make sure that a user can perform a PI Vision tag search against all PI tag attributes, just like you are able to do in PI ProcessBook. There shouldn't be a limit on which tag attributes are searchable.
It would also be useful to be able to search tags when using an adhoc trend - currently tag has to be on a graphic to be trended - this is not always the case especially when trouble shooting process problems
