The other comments are spot on. Having the ability to use the arrow keys for fine adjustment of the location of the vertical trend cursor was a valuable feature of PI ProcessBook that was not carried over to PI Vision. It would be helpful for our engineers to have this feature to move the trend cursor forward/back by a small increment using the arrow keys instead of needing to change the graph timeline to an extremely short increment of time. While adding this feature, it's also imperative to maintain the ability to drag the trend cursor using the mouse for more coarse adjustment.
What specific problem are you trying to solve with this enhancement?
When troubleshooting process issues, users often need to identify values at extremely precise timestamps sometimes down to a couple of seconds. Using only the mouse makes this difficult because the trend cursor tends to jump around, making fine adjustments frustrating and imprecise. This level of accuracy is critical in Operations, where even a small timestamp difference can reveal an important process change. This capability existed in ProcessBook and was heavily relied upon by Operations personnel.
How would you like this feature to work?
The feature should work the same way it did in ProcessBook. After placing a time cursor on a trend, the user should be able to move the cursor forward or backward using the keyboard arrow keys. Each arrow key press should shift the cursor by a defined increment (typically one second), allowing users to quickly and precisely land on the exact moment they need to evaluate.
Who will benefit the most from this enhancement?
Operations staff, process engineers, production teams, and anyone involved in daily troubleshooting or analysis of time-series data will benefit. These users frequently need precise time alignment to identify peaks, dips, step changes, or anomalies. Keyboard-driven cursor movement significantly improves accuracy, reduces frustration, and restores a capability many relied on in ProcessBook before transitioning to PI Vision.
When troubleshooting process issues, being able to use the keyboard allows you to identify values at a precise time. Sometimes the difference in a value within a couple seconds can be really important. When clicking with a mouse, you can't get that precision, and it often jumps around. This was an extremely useful feature of Processbook for Operations personnel. The feature should work as it did in process book. Once you click a timeline onto the trend, the keyboard arrow keys would then allow you to move the line back and forth by a second to get to precisely the time you're looking for.
We really need to use this functionality with the arrows to obtain better precision in selecting the period of the measurement graphs. We request that it be implemented in future versions of the software.
I have run into this issue multiple times since switching from Processbook to Vision. It's very frustrating to try to drag a cursor to the precise point on a trend.
Especially when switching from ProcessBook, the users are used to this function and miss it very much
this would be very helpful with our daily ethanol productions
